Frances Barkley Willess writes,
" I am attaching a transcript of the Bible of James Shaw and Mary Cowan, who were married in Warren County in 1808. The Bible was in the possession of their son William B. Shaw, and this is a copy a grandson, John Cowan Shaw, had made of it when he was young and his Uncle William stayed with his family for a while. I don't know what happened to the Bible after William's death in 1886, as he had no children as far as I know. My guess is that John Cowan Shaw copied the original Bible between 1871-1874, as it is probable his uncle William stayed with his family after the death of his first wife in 1871 until he remarried in 1874.

James and Mary moved first to Wayne County, Indiana, and about 1832 to Tippecanoe County, Indiana, where they both died."

JAMES AND MARY COWAN SHAW BIBLE

James Shaw, the son of John Shaw and Margaret Kelley; and Mary Cowan, daughter of John Cowan [see footnote], were married in Warren County, Ohio on March 4, 1808, according to Warren County Marriage Records.

Following is a copy dated 1927 of the James Shaw Bible as John Cowan Shaw, born 1854 to Thomas Shaw and Julia Mitts, had copied it years earlier from the Bible in possession of William B. Shaw. I have attempted to transcribe exactly as he wrote. The spelling and punctuation are his, but his handwriting is extremely hard to read.

This page previously showed Mary Cowan to be the daughter of John and Mary Cowan. She was indeed the daughter of John Cowan, but I later learned when I received a copy of his will that his wife Mary was my Mary's stepmother and he had only been married to her a short time.
