MICHAEL MAHER, farmer; P. O. Oregon; was born in Kilkenney Co., Ireland, Oct. 15, 1812, of parents Patrick and Catharine (Chail) Maher, and, at the age of 18 years, emigrated to America, stopping at Quebec, where for two years he was engaged at "flat-boating;" thence he removed into the State of New York and remained four years and a half; thence, to Hamilton Co., Ohio, where, for two years, he was employed in constructing pikes; thence, to Warren County, where he has since resided. marriage with Hannah Young, a native of Ohio, but of parents of English and Irish descent. They became the parents of the following-named children: William, born May 15, 1840; John Y., born March 4, 1842; Catharine (deceased), born Sept. 1, 1845; Richard, born Sept. 1, 1847; Mary, born Sept. 3, 1849; Lydia, born June 21, 1854; Anna M., born April 28, 1857, and Hannah E., born Feb. 27, 1861. Mr. Maher was educated in his native country. On reaching the State of Ohio, he was among the first to discover stone coal in the county of Trumbull. He was the possessor of one of the first-built houses in the now great Western metropolis of Chicago; he, is now residing on his own land—a farm of 60-odd acres lying some miles east of Lebanon, enjoying the hard-earned fruits of the labor of earlier years. |
